Summary

The central project Z2 manages the data generated by the BEF-China projects, supports the digital acquisition of field data and supports the data analysis in various ways. We promote synthesis by consulting the projects during their analysis especially when merging data from different projects. We provide help with basic and advanced statistics (e.g. hierarchical or structural equation models). For this we hold statistics courses on a regular basis but are also continually involved in analysis projects.

We make data accessible not only by teaching how to deal with complex and large datasets, but also by harmonizing and presenting the data in our web application (BEFdata). Within the BEF-China project we initiated this software, which is now also used by our Chinese partner projects (http://159.226.89.107/) and the FunDivEUROPE (www.fundiveurope.eu) project. BEFdata is open source software designed to present and harmonize complex datasets. Our own instance of BEFdata is accessible under http://china.befdata.biow.uni-leipzig.de. Through the web application, we present the data to the members of our Research Unit but also to the public.

Students working in small groups during a data analysis workshop (top left), a priority discussion of our developing group for the BEFdata portal (top and bottom right), as well as a screen shot of the data portal listing the first seven of currently 138 datasets or document resources uploaded to the portal (bottom left).
